The guys behind the development of the free Flash point-and-click game weren’t kidding when they say that Snakes of Avalon is a drinking man’s game. This girl adventurer didn’t enjoy this game with her favorite lager, but she did enjoy it with her Vitamin Water and is still having a blast playing.
This is not your mother’s adventure game, as all the interaction (I’m at the beginning of Act III but wanted to stop and get the review out) takes place in one room, the Avalon Bar. You’ll meet Toughguy with his gleeing yellow mullet. Bob, the bald, squinty bartender and his “beloved” Mary. As you stagger around the bar looking for items you can interact with (left click to use, right click for info) you’ll start overhearing a devilish conversation about a woman planning the murder of her husband. You, Jack, drunken braggart, must regain some motor control and help stop this fiendish plan.
Will the talking fish, moose head and poster help you or hinder you? Ahh you’ll have to find out for yourself, my friends.
Snakes of Avalon is a wonderful indie game that pays homage to the great games of LucasArts (Grim Fandago, Monkey Island, etc). There’s not a lot of hand holding to get you from point A to B, but that’s okay. At no point did I get completely frustrated that I wanted to end the game, I wanted to keep trying different things and combinations and dialog until I got it just right. It’s satisfying when you do and somewhat hilarious too.
Snakes of Avalon is a free download and well worth your time.
